Get In Line: The Assembly

Nestled in between designer shops like Phillip Lim and Christian Louboutin and restaurants Pump and Sur, owned by Real Housewives of Beverly Hills Lisa Vanderpump, you’ll find a cute little coffee shop called The Assembly.

It’s bright with lots of natural sunlight pouring in (even on an abnormal cloudy day like we had yesterday) and has wood accents with hints of blue that pairs well with the modern and white table and chairs. Most likely, you’ve probably even seen or heard about The Assembly from social media. You could spend a good part of the morning taking photos of your coffee in various nooks and crannies of the shop – from the bright and airy front to the relaxing middle section to the quaint outdoor patio with plants and comfy seating. It’s hard not to fall in love with this coffee shop in the middle of the hustle and bustle of West Hollywood.

What’s more is that they use Counter Culture Coffee for their coffee, a unique (but welcomed) roaster from North Carolina. It’s nice to see a coffee shop use a company that not many of us are familiar with or have ever tasted. Which takes us to the actual coffee.

We walked in, glanced at the main menu, then a seasonal menu to the side of that caught our eye. PUMPKIN SPICE LATTE!? YES, PLEASE. It went perfectly with the kind of gloomy, on-the-verge-of-rain weather we were having. We also settled in on a cortado (Jay is a sucker for ’em and basically gets them wherever he goes).

As we waited for our coffee, we snapped a few pictures and ogled the delicious looking sweets in the display case. It wasn’t long until our coffees were ready at the counter. They came in cute ceramic mugs with a faint pop of color around the bottom (made by West River Field Lab, run by Orange County artist, Nobuhito Nishigawara). We mean, it was basically begging for us to take a few pictures of it… and 1000 pictures later in various spots around the coffee shop (shameless, we know!), we finally settled in on tasting our deliciously looking (and smelling) coffee.

Perfection in a cup. The pumpkin spice latte (with almond milk) is the epitome of fall, especially for Whit who spent half of her childhood in the Midwest where fall meant leaves changing colors, warm cable-knit sweaters and the crisp morning air welcoming you to a new day. Yep, that’s the kind of emotion and memories this pumpkin spice latte brings.

As for the cortado, it was like having your oldest friend who lives thousands of miles away come and visit you. It was warm and so nice to have and although you try to savor everything, your friend (or in this case, the cortado) is gone too soon. All analogies aside, this cortado was on point and good until the very last drop. We’d be back for it again along with any other offerings The Assembly has on their menu.

You see, the concept of The Assembly is quite simple – they “seek to create a space that is created by the community, for the community.” We can definitely get on board with that idea. So, next time you’re in West Hollywood and trying to figure out the perfect spot to unwind and grab a really great cup of coffee, head over to The Assembly, chat with the baristas, make a new friend or two and snap some pictures to share with your other friends. Take in the entire experience of enjoying a cup of coffee and the craftsmanship and hard work of the culture and community that it encompasses.

Also, before we forget, special THANK YOU to @sippcuratedgoods on Instagram for being a sweetheart and recommending this beautiful space! Without you, we may have never found this place and for that, we’re thankful for you. Now, we really do owe you a cup of coffee soon! Let’s get together! The coffee community is so great and we’re always taking in suggestions from people we meet at coffee shops and through social media, so if you have a coffee shop to suggest, we’d love to hear about it! Contact us through here or on our social media, such as Instagram and Twitter. We really would love to start having a weekly meet up with some of the other coffee aficionados around Orange County/LA County, so let’s grab a cuppa joe soon!
