Milk & Honey: I Surrender

I surrender.

Sometimes when we feel like life is causing us to look all sorts of different directions, the best thing we can do is just look up and say, “I surrender to You.” So, how can we focus on Him even though we cannot see His path for us?

“And whoever does not carry their cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.”

(Luke 14:27) NIV

I surrender.

Sometimes when we feel like life is causing us to look all sorts of different directions, the best thing we can do is just look up and say, “I surrender to You.”

As followers of Christ, you’d think that comes easily, but it doesn’t. In fact, it can be a challenge, especially when we’re feeling disconnected from God through all the chaos.

So, how can we focus on Him even though we cannot see His path for us?

For starters, we remind ourselves of Mary, Jesus’ mother. Mary was a virgin, engaged to be married to Joseph when an angel came to her and said that she would give birth to a son and name him Jesus. Mary could have easily fought it, but instead she took the angel’s words to heart and trusted God’s will.

The lesson that Mary teaches us is that it’s better to surrender our desire to control every situation and rely solely on Him, trusting that He will watch after us in every situation. The biggest takeaway is that we believe that He is working out His perfect plan for us and through acceptance we will experience the overwhelming joy that comes through obedience.

“Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him and he will do this: He will make your righteous reward shine like the dawn, your vindication like the noonday sun.”

(Psalm 37:5-6) NIV

To surrender to God and allow Him to have His way is, for a lack of a better word, daunting. Our world is told that WE have the power to be and do whatever we want…AND WE DO, with one caveat –  through Christ who freely gives and blesses those who love Him and follow His way.

We surrender to You, God.

Thoughts over coffee:

Where do you think God is trying to lead you and why are you having a hard time surrendering to His ways?

How do you think Mary felt when the angel told her she’d be giving birth to the Son of Man?

What steps can you take to fully give your worries and anxiety to God and live your life for Him?
