Hometown Heroes: Prospect Coffee Roasters

Who drives nearly 90 miles for a cup of coffee on a Saturday morning? We do.

Enter: Prospect Coffee Roasters in Ventura, California. We were able to celebrate their “opening day” with them and let’s just say that they hit it out of the ballpark with all the special attention to detail and thought they put into their shop. Come read about our experience and see why you should put this shop on your list!

Who drives nearly 90 miles for a cup of coffee on a Saturday morning? We do.

For those of you who are surprised by this revelation, allow us to introduce ourselves: we’re Daily Coffee Run and we have this thing with coffee and love exploring new shops in up-and-coming coffee cities while getting to know the people beyond the bar.

Prospect Coffee Roasters was one of the coffee shops we’d been anticipating for a long while with what seemed to be the rest of Ventura and Greater Los Angeles, so we knew that we couldn’t miss it. Continue reading “Hometown Heroes: Prospect Coffee Roasters”

Balancing Beans: Tilt Coffee Bar

Tilt is turning the coffee world on its head and redefining what hospitality means within the specialty coffee industry. Read on to learn more about the new kid on the block and their signature drinks that are putting them above the clouds.

Hey coffee lovers, get ready for a one-of-a-kind experience at LA’s newest coffee shop, Tilt Coffee Bar! A Tale of Two Roasters

Revolution Roasters and Steady State Roasting are exactly one mile apart from each other, yet there’s a sort of “je ne sais quoi” about each coffee shop that allows us to truly appreciate both places for what they are – and we think you will, too! You see there’s this unwritten rule in coffee that we’re starting to understand as we delve into this well-caffeinated world: “good” coffee is in the eye of the beholder.

“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness…we had everything before us, we had nothing before us…”

Nostalgia comes to mind as we make our way past San Clemente, leaving Orange County, into the openness of Camp Pendleton to our left and the Pacific Ocean to our right. As we pass familiar places that seemed like minuscule details as a child, we smile and think of a fun memory attached to the place we once called home – Oceanside, California. Stay Solid: Solid Coffee Roasters

Have you ever walked into a new coffee shop and thought to yourself, “Oh, I’m going to like you and I haven’t even tried your coffee”?

Although Solid Coffee Roasters’ brick and mortar shop has only been open for a little over a month, it’s definitely become the hottest new coffee shop. You’ll understand why as soon as you walk in the door – you’re instantly greeted by somebody who looks eager to make you the best drink you’ve ever had and the decor is bright and minimalistic with succulents on each table to add a pop of color. We guess you could say it’s a perfect place for those Instagram shots. But, what’s more perfect than the picture is the taste of the handcrafted cup of coffee you receive.

Coffee 101: Stumptown Coffee Cupping

Okay, so this is going to be a different kind of post and definitely more of a diary style one…hope you guys don’t mind! Last week, we had the pleasure of going to a Stumptown cupping in DTLA and had such an amazing first experience.

Like we said when we first started this whole coffee adventure – we aren’t experts, nor do we ever want to make people feel inferior to the small bits of coffee knowledge we do know. Our goal has always been to have an open community of people who love coffee and love people. Simple! So, since moving back to California, we are experiencing things for the first time as a married couple and we knew that cuppings were going to be a lot easier to find in LA, especially with some of the third wave heavyweights all in one city.
So, hold on, back up…what is a cupping exactly? A cupping is essentially a scientific way roasters will use to determine if the beans are worth brewing. You find different characteristics with each bean and get to compare one to another. Pretty awesome, stuff, right?

Community in a Cup: Steelhead Coffee

Steelhead Coffee is quite literally a coffee shop corner. As in, if you don’t know where you’re going, you’ll circle around three times trying to find it & another three times trying to find parking around the area. But, that should only prove how eager and determined we were to visit this sweet little coffee shop in the Cal Heights area of Long Beach. It’s also worth noting that it’s well-worth the 30 minute drive from us and is one of our favorite shops we visited during our Long Beach coffee crawl last week. Here’s why… Continue reading “Community in a Cup: Steelhead Coffee”

Buzzin’: Common Room Roasters

Here at Daily Coffee Run some of our favorite things are from Melbourne, Australia (shout out to our beautiful legend of a friend G) and now we can add Common Room Roasters to that long list of reasons why it’s great. Ed, the owner, originates from Melbourne and if there’s anything you need to know about Aussies (besides the fact that nobody in Australia drinks Fosters and thongs are things you wear on your feet, not your…well, you know) it’s that they know their coffee and take it very, very seriously. In other words, you know you’ve come to the right coffee shop when you hear the owner is Australian (and not to sound bossy, but you should try one of everything while you’re there).

Espresso Yourself: Zendo

We remember our first time like it was yesterday. It was a blazing hot Sunday afternoon in June and we decided to check out a coffee shop we had never been to before. We walked into Zendo and instantly perked up and started drawing inspiration from the art on the wall and the little nicknacks on the bar. Since every single seat inside was filled, we took our ice cold lattes from the sweet barista and went outside to the back patio. We sipped on our giant cups of coffee and dreamt of traveling and drinking coffee together. Thus, Daily Coffee Run came to fruition and well as they say, the rest is history…

Cold Brew Throwdown

Gone are the days where cold coffee meant regular coffee with ice cubes in it (although some people will still try to pull a fast one on us) or a pot of coffee from yesterday that was put into the refrigerator. These days, it’s crafted and brewed in cold water for at least 12 hours and can be flavored and/or filled with nitrogen.

We are cold brew fiends and it’s one of two usual drinks we choose if we’re trying out a new coffee shop, the other being a cortado. But, sometimes we don’t have a chance to go to an actual coffee shop or we’re feeling too lazy to make a cup for ourselves (hey, we’re just being honest here…). So we decided to head over to the grocery store and test out all the cold brews we could find and let you know how they stacked up!
